Homework Takes Hours: What’s Normal and What Isn’t?

If homework seems to take over your entire evening, you may be wondering whether the workload is normal or if your child is struggling. While an occasional long night can happen, homework consistently taking hours may be a sign that something else is going on.

The amount of homework students can reasonably handle depends on their age, grade level, and the difficulty of their classes. What matters most is whether your child can complete assignments within a manageable amount of time without constant frustration, exhaustion, or parent assistance.

Pay attention to how your child spends homework time:

Are they easily distracted?

Do they have trouble getting started?

Are they spending an unusually long time on one subject?

Sometimes the problem is time management or organization rather than the amount of homework itself.

Academic gaps can also make assignments take much longer.

A math worksheet that should be manageable may become overwhelming when a student is missing a foundational skill.

Reading assignments can take significantly longer when a child struggles with fluency or comprehension.

Watch for patterns such as frequent tears or frustration, avoiding homework, staying up late to finish assignments, needing constant help, or regularly spending much longer on work than expected. These can be signs that your child needs additional support.

A consistent homework routine, fewer distractions, planned breaks, and breaking assignments into smaller tasks can help.
